Black, Bold, & Beautiful: A Poem

Written by Brittany Henderson
Black is her shade
Bold is her persona
Beauty blossoms from her roots

All the times she had been chastised for being her own true self caused pics of her heart to sever and melt.
She’s a social butterfly
Yet bound to her cocoon
All the times she had been chastised for being her own true self caused pics of her heart to sever and melt
She silenced her feelings of uncertainty yet still spreads her gift of love
She acknowledged that she was unique
Yet still one of the same
Her talents one of a kind
Her soul so courageous but so jaded
She battled with being herself
She fought to not grab hold of society by its belt
But to be free and be her own Black, Bold, Beautiful self.
She rose above all self doubt and planted her seeds
Seeds of hope
Seeds of love
Seeds of peace
She barreled through the discrimination, the segregation, and the degradation
Taking with her only lessons from those who taught her to love and to bring peace
She shared her talents and embraced her being.
But some never got a glimpse because of the picture they painted her to be.
